Botox

Botulinum toxin (commonly known as the brands Botox®, Dysport® and Azzalure®) is a natural protein and is used against wrinkles, headache and migraine, excessive sweating and teeth grinding.

Botulinum toxin

Botox® has been used in medicine for many years to treat conditions such as muscle spasms and chronic headaches. In cosmetic medicine, Botox® is used to relax tensed muscles in the face in order to reduce the appearance of wrinkles for instance around the eyes and on the forehead.

Botox® can give alleviating results against more than just wrinkles.

Botox® is not only used to soften wrinkles, but also against excessive perspiration in the armpits, hands, and feet, against teeth grinding, and against headaches and migraines.

Intake

The first step is always an intake with our cosmetic doctor. During this consultation our exact method, your wishes and the realistic possibilities are discussed.

Customized treatment

During the consultation the doctor inspects the area that is to be treated. Because every skin and every type of wrinkle, headache, teeth grinding and excessive perspiration is different we need to customize every treatment for optimal results. The exact price and the number of treatments required therefore also differ for each person.

For an intake we charge € 50,-. In most cases we can plan an intake with a treatment directly after, if so desired and requested in advance.

Botox® can be used against wrinkles, excessive sweating, headaches, and teeth grinding.

More than 15 years of experience

Because Botox® has been widely used for many years in the world of medicine the long-term effects are known and it is regarded as a safe product. It is however still important that Botox® is administered by a skilled doctor in order to safely achieve optimal results. We have over 15 years of experience with Botox® and thus have treated a wide variety of faces, wrinkles, headaches, teeth grinding, and excessive perspiration. As such our cosmetic doctors are more than qualified to customize and perform the most effective treatment.

Every treatment is customized for optimal results.

Pre-care

Any make-up will be removed before the treatment. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or if you have a muscle disease or certain auto-immune disease it is better to avoid a treatment with Botox®. In case you want to become pregnant in the first 6 months after the treatment it is also better to postpone the treatment until after the pregnancy.

The length of the treatment depends on the size of the area that needs to be treated and varies between 15 and 30 minutes. Most people do not experience the injections as painful.

Wrinkles

“Are you angry?” is a line too many people are asked undeserved. The wrinkles in between the eyebrows can be ingrained in the skin due to frequent frowning. As such it may seem that someone is constantly looking angry, even though they are not angry at all.

“Are you angry?”

Many wrinkles are caused by the contraction of particular muscles in the face. The crows feet are caused by the contraction of the orbital muscles around the eyes, the frown is caused by looking stern or angry, and the wrinkles on the forehead are caused by looking surprised or worried. Similarly there are many facial wrinkles caused by muscle contraction, for instance also around the nose and mouth.

Botox® is used to partially relax the muscles around these areas. When the muscles are weakened, they cannot be contracted as strongly, which will then reduce the active formation of the wrinkles and cause them to smoothen out over time. After the treatment the ingrained wrinkles will still be visible - compare this with the folds in a sheet of paper. If you stop folding the paper the folds are still there. Only after some time, when the skin renews itself, the wrinkles will visibly soften or even completely disappear.

By softening wrinkles with Botox® the face regains some of its well-rested, open and friendly appearance.

Botox® is primarily used to treat shallow wrinkles. Deeper wrinkles tend to point to a loss of volume in which case a filler would be needed to effectively reduce the wrinkles' appearance.Usually it is a combination of Botox® and filler treatments, together with skin rejuvenation, that produces the best result. The Botox® and fillers smoothen the wrinkles, while the rejuvenating skin treatment improves the quality of the skin.

Excessive sweating

Excessive perspiration, also known as hyperhidrosis, can be effectively treated using Botox®. The condition occurs most often in the armpits, but can also affect the palms of the hands, the soles of the feet, or the forehead.

By treating these areas with Botox®, the communication between the nerves and the sweat glands is temporarily interrupted, causing the glands to produce less moisture.

The treatment of excessive perspiration is local and does not affect the amount of sweat in other parts of the body, as the rest of the body will be able to sweat normally. The effect of the Botox® is noticeable within only a couple of days. Perspiration levels are maximally reduced (or fully halted) within 2 weeks after the treatment.

The reduction of excessive perspiration can be extremely relieving in everyday life.

The treatment of hyperhidrosis in the armpits lasts on average between 3 to 6 months. Once the effects start to wear out it is possible to repeat the treatment without risk.

Headache and Migraine

Everyone suffers from a headache every now and then. However, a tension headache or migraine occurs frequently and with great intensity. The treatment of migraines requires expertise and can differ between individuals.

Migraines can have a large impact on daily life. A little Botox® can help reduce the migraines.

Botox® disturbs the communications between the nerves and the muscles responsible for migraines and tension headaches. The effect of the Botox® treatment can be felt after only a couple of days. The headaches will be maximally reduced after two weeks. Research on the effectiveness of Botox® against migraines has shown that migraine-frequency reduced on average from 7 days per month to less than 1 day per month.

Teeth grinding

When Botox® is injected in the masticatory muscles the clamping of the jaws and the grinding of teeth will decrease. The treatment makes sure that the masticatory muscles cannot be tensed as much. As such the jaw will feel less tense and the teeth will be better protected.

After care

Usually the skin looks normal after a Botox® treatment. The following general matters apply:

  • Directly after the treatment you may work again. Sports are allowed after 4 hours.
  • After the treatment some edema and redness may appear. This disappears by itself in time.
  • It is also possible for some bruises to appear. These will be visible for some days to weeks, depending on how long you usually keep a bruise.
  • During the first 6 weeks you need to protect the treated area with a proper sunscreen (factor 30 or higher). Any potential bruises need to be especially well-protected.

Result

The effect of Botox® will become visible within 4 to 5 days, and will be optimal after 2 weeks. If necessary, a control appointment can take place in the 3rd and 4th week after the treatment.

The effect of a Botox® treatment generally lasts between 3 to 4 months. During this period you will notice that the treated muscles cannot be tensed as much. With the treatment of wrinkles you will notice that these will soften or even completely disappear during the course of the next months, when the skin renews itself. With the treatment of teeth grinding, excessive perspiration, and headaches, you will notice that during the period of 3 to 4 months these complaints will be weakened.

The treated complaints such as headaches and excessive perspiration will be reduced for as long as the Botox® is effective.

Follow-up treatment

The exact duration of the effectiveness of Botox® and the result differ per person. Generally botulinum toxin is effective for about 3 to 4 months. After this period it is usually gone. This means that after this period wrinkles can be actively formed again, and that complaints such as headaches, excessive sweating and teeth grinding can start again.

The treatment can be repeated effectively after these 3 or 4 months have past. Repeated treatments tend to produce an even better and longer-lasting effect than the first. It is important to leave at least 3 months between treatments in order to prevent the body's production of antibodies, which would reduce the effectiveness of the Botox®.

Treated wrinkles will smoothen or even completely disappear in the course of the next months.
