What exactly are blue vessels? And how are they different from varicose veins?

Skin therapist Naomi explains:

Blue or purplish vessels on the legs, hands or under the eyes can be visible for various reasons. Under the eyes, for example, the skin is often a bit thinner - this can be due to age, but can also be the case from childhood. The blood vessels may also have widened over time (such as on the hands) or there is naturally less fat and connective tissue on top of the vessels.

The blood in veins is darker in colour than in arteries, causing these vessels to shine blue through the skin.

On the legs, there may also be varicose veins. These are dilated and tortuous veins located deeper in the legs. They usually occur due to a problem with the valves in the veins, causing blood to backflow. This puts pressure on the vessel wall, causing them to expand. They are thicker and can cause pain or a heavy feeling.

Our solution

Blue vessels on the hands, legs or face can usually be treated well with our specialised laser. The vessels shrink with each treatment so they are usually no longer visible in the end.

For vessels on the legs, we usually send you to a phlebologist first to have them check that there is not too much pressure on the vessels.

The consultation

As a first step, we always want to see your skin. During a consultation, we put together a personalised treatment plan because every skin is different. So the exact price and number of treatments required also vary from person to person.

During this consultation, the laser specialist explains how we will treat the vessels and the aftercare and possible complications. They also give advice on how best to maintain your skin, including in everyday life.

With more than 30 years of experience, we have treated a wide variety of skin and vessels

A consultation with one of our laser specialists costs € 35,-. These costs will be deducted from the costs of the treatment, provided that the treatment takes place within 6 months of the consultation date.

For blue vessels, a consultation alone can always be arranged first to assess whether the vessels can be treated with a laser, or whether you need to be treated by a phlebologist first.

Pre-care

It is important that the skin is as light as possible (not tanned) before laser treatment. Furthermore, keep the following in mind:

  • Avoid exposure to the sun or sunbed 3 to 4 weeks before treatment.
  • Self-tanning cream (bronzer) should also be avoided for 1 week before treatment.
  • If you pregnant are or breastfeeding gives you cannot be treated.

Treatment

In our experience, blue vessels can be treated well with our powerful Ellipse Nd: YAG laser. The energy of the Ellipse laser causes the vessels to locally narrow or even shrivel up completely. As a result, the blue vessels usually fade to the point where they are eventually no longer visible. Our laser specialists have the very latest Ellipse: the Nordlys.

The pulses of the Ellipse laser can be felt, but are actually tolerable for everyone because the handpiece also cools the skin. Some areas on the body can be a bit more sensitive than others.

With our methods, we fade blue vessels and significantly improve skin quality

The duration of a treatment depends on how much needs to be treated. For example, blue vessels on the hands take about 25 minutes. A few small vessels on the legs can be done in as little as 10 minutes.

For blue vessels under the eyes, we usually see good results after just 1 to 2 treatments. For blue vessels on the legs, between 3 and 5 treatments may be needed, depending on the width and thickness of the blue vessels. We also see here that maintenance is needed more often because there is more pressure on the legs.

Very professional - good explanations - top treatment

How can I be sure of the capabilities of my practitioner?

Choice Guide

Nowadays we are flooded with cosmetic treatments, trends and hypes. In every neighborhood of the city there are several clinics that offer various types of treatments, each claiming to be better than the other.

But how do you choose a good clinic? And how do you know for sure that you end up with a competent practitioner?

We are happy to help you on your way with our choice guide:

First the basics

  • First, check if the clinic has a good reputation or if you know people who can recommend the clinic. A quick Google search for the clinic in question will get you a long way. Now, you don't have to be put off by a few bad reviews, but if a clinic has a lot of negative reviews, it might be smart to look elsewhere.
  • Who do you have an appointment with and is that the person who will also treat you? You can ask these questions directly by phone or email at the reception. It is wise to then google that practitioner and see if they have the right certifications and diplomas, regardless of what is stated on the website of the clinic itself. You can search for a skin therapist, cosmetic doctor, or plastic surgeon

The consultation

Once you have chosen a clinic and practitioner, it is time for a consultation. During this consultation you can ask the following questions:

  • How often should I be treated?
  • What degrees and certifications do you have?
  • How much does a treatment cost?
  • What kind of aftercare do you provide and is this included in the price?
  • What happens if the result is not good enough?

Lastly…

  • Were all your questions answered properly during the consultation? Realize that you have every right to ask questions and that these must be answered clearly.
  • Take your time. A practitioner should never force you to undergo a treatment right now. Does it feel pushy? Or do you still have doubts? Then say that you would like to think about it and that you will contact them if you want to start the treatment.

Aftercare

After treatment, the following practical matters apply:

  • The next day may see some swelling and redness in the treated areas. This disappears on average after 3 to 7 days
  • When treating blue veins on the face, you may suffer from headache the first few days after treatment. You may use paracetamol for this purpose.
  • During treatment of blue vessels under eyes, there may be a bruise arise. It may also develop after 3 to 6 weeks.
  • No sun and/or sunbed for 3-4 weeks. For the face, use a sunscreen with at least SPF 30.
  • After treating the leg vessels no sun and/or sunbed for eight weeks.
  • Please spend the first 4 days no exercising and no strenuous exercise perform: too much pressure is then exerted on the vessels in the face and/or legs

They were knowledgeable, and even switched with my doctors about treatment as a precaution. Very nice. I feel very comfortable here, and all the staff, but especially Claire, are incredibly nice.

Results

The treated vessels shrink, so they are usually no longer visible in the end. Results are generally visible after 4 to 8 weeks. For the legs, the result usually requires a bit more time. In general, several treatments are almost always needed to achieve optimal results.

Whereas the treatment of blue vessels on the legs and under the eyes often produces good results, we usually see poorer results with blue vessels on the hands and forehead. Although the blue vessels may shrink, they will almost never become completely invisible like on the legs and under the eyes.

From start to finish I felt like I was in capable hands. The result speaks for itself.

Prices

A blue vessel treatment starts at €165.

The exact price, together with a personalised treatment plan, will be drawn up during the consultation with one of our laser specialists.

A consultation with one of our laser specialists costs € 35,-. These costs will be deducted from the costs of the treatment, provided that the treatment takes place within 6 months of the consultation date.

For blue vessels on the legs, a consultation alone can always be arranged first to assess whether the vessels can be treated with a laser, or whether you need to be seen by a phlebologist first.

Q&A

Doesn't my body need the treated vessels?

Skin therapist Naomi explains:

You can best think of the vessels as a varicose vein. This is not a functional vessel and no longer has a function in the body. In fact, other vessels have already taken over that function. So your body does not need the vessels.

Is the treatment dangerous?

Skin therapist Claire Lune explains:

Although this is a safe treatment, there is always a chance of complications, for example if a laser is not adjusted properly and a blister or burn occurs. Although these chances exist, they are exceptional cases and almost never occur.

Are the treated blue drums gone forever?

Skin therapist Claire Lune explains:

The fairest answer is: no, the blue vessels can expand a little over time (usually after years), making them visible again. So while the treatments usually deliver long-term results, the reality is that the vessels can reappear over time.

In addition, completely new blue vessels can always develop, especially on the legs.

Does the treatment hurt?

Laser specialist Tanja explains:

The pulses of the Ellipse laser can be felt, but are actually tolerable for everyone because the handpiece also cools the skin. Some areas on the body can be a bit more sensitive than others.

How long does a treatment take?

Skin therapist Naomi explains:

A consultation takes about 20 minutes and the duration of a treatment depends on how much needs to be treated. For example, a treatment of blue vessels on the hands takes 25 minutes. A few small vessels on the temples can be done in as little as 10 minutes.

What's the price of a treatment?

Skin therapist Naomi explains:

This depends entirely on the size of the area and the amount of blue vessels to be treated. As an indication, our treatments for blue vessels start at €165 for blue vessels on the temples on the face, while a treatment of blue vessels on the legs can easily cost €250 or more.

How do I look after treatment?

Laser specialist Tanja explains:

For the first 3 days, there may be some swelling and redness on and around the treated areas. A bruise may also appear during treatment. This may also appear after 3 to 6 weeks.

Can I camouflage any redness or bruising after the treatment?

Skin therapist Claire Lune explains:

Yes! You may simply camouflage the treated skin. By the way, we have beautiful products for this, which also help the skin in the healing process at the same time. You can ask for these at the counter or from your therapist.

How many treatments do I need?

Skin therapist Naomi explains:

Usually a considerable improvement can be noted after 2 treatments already. For optimal results however, we see that generally 3 to 5 treatments are required, depending on the width and thickness of the blue veins.
