Almost everyone experiences acne at one time or another. Although we usually cannot remove the cause, we can inhibit active acne and even out acne scars.

But how exactly does the treatment work? Is it worthwhile? And what do you need to consider?

Where do those puffs come from?

Skin therapist Claire Lune explains:

During puberty, our hormone levels change dramatically. As a result, we undergo all kinds of physical changes - our bodies grow into an adult shape and we get body hair, for example.

Hormones also cause the glands in our skin to produce more sebum. This extra sebum can clog up the glands. This can cause papules, pustules, white-heads, black-heads or cysts. Papules occur when a hair follicle is deprived of air and certain bacteria take over. They can be recognised as red bumps on which a white tip cannot yet be seen. With pustules, the hair follicles are inflamed and the bumps are filled with pus, recognisable by the white-yellow tip. Black-heads are clogged hair follicles, the tip of which has come into contact with oxygen and turned black. White-heads lie deeper than black-heads and thus remain white in colour. In a cyst, the inflammation is quarantined by the body with a membrane, so nothing can get in or out.

When acne occurs during puberty we speak of acne vulgaris. However, it can also occur later in life, in which case we speak of acne tarda. This form of acne is also usually caused by (altered) hormones, genes or diet.

Our solution

With our powerful IPL, we can significantly slow down active acne. It will also improve acne scars. We can improve scars one step further with our fractional therapy.

Although we cannot completely eliminate the underlying cause of acne, we can soothe and strengthen the skin. Active acne usually does require maintenance. The aim of any treatment is to have a positive impact on how you feel, both in your personal and professional life.

The consultation

Before we start treatment, there is always a consultation with one of our experienced laser specialists. During this consultation, we discuss your wishes, the possibilities and what you can realistically expect from the treatment.

A treatment made-to-measure

Every skin is unique - and every form of acne requires a different approach. This is why we always create a personalised treatment plan for you. During the consultation, our specialist examines your skin and the severity of the acne. Based on this, we determine the most suitable treatment, including an indication of the cost and the number of sessions required.

With more than 30 years of experience, we have treated a wide variety of skin and acne

A consultation with one of our laser specialists costs € 50,-. These costs will be deducted from the costs of the first treatment, provided the treatment takes place within 6 months of the consultation date. If you are already fairly certain that you wish to be treated, we can usually combine a consultation with an initial treatment on request.

Treatment

We can treat both active acne and acne scars with different techniques. In each session, we improve the structure and appearance of your skin step by step.

Every skin is unique. So are our treatments.

The Ellipse IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) gives short flashes of intense light. These flashes of high energy kill the bacteria of active acne, drying up pimples and reducing redness. It also fades the pigment of acne scars.

In addition, the skin goes through an overall improvement after treatment with the IPL. Pores refine and skin tone evens out. Collagen production is also stimulated, rejuvenating and firming the skin.

The flashes of IPL light therapy are warm and can be bright on the eyes, even when wearing protective glasses. Some people experience the flashes as sensitive, but in general, the treatment is well tolerated and considered not too painful by our clients. After treatment, the treated area may feel slightly glowing or warm.

Pre-care

It is important that the skin is as light as possible (non-sun tanned) before treatment with the IPL.

  • Avoid exposure to the sun or sunbed 3 to 4 weeks before treatment.
  • Self-tanning cream (bronzer) should also be avoided for 1 week before treatment.
  • If you pregnant are or breastfeeding gives you cannot be treated.

Aftercare

After treatment, please note the following:

  • The skin may look a bit sunburned-red look, this disappears within a few hours.
  • Acne is a form of inflammation in the skin and can kindle after treatment.
  • The next day there may be some swelling in the treated areas, this swelling disappears after 3-5 days.
  • The first 3 to 4 weeks no sun and no sunbed. During this healing period, we also recommend no self-tanning cream (bronzer) to use.

We recommend always using a cream with protection factor (SPF 30+) and reapply it every 2 hours if you go out in the sun.

Results

In the first week after treatment, the skin may look a little 'messy' or unsettled. This is part of the recovery process and may simply be camouflaged with make-up during this period.

IPL treatment works because the light energy destroys the bacteria that cause acne. This dries out pimples, reduces redness, fades discoloured acne scars and gradually improves skin texture.

The final result of a treatment becomes visible after about 4 weeks. After each session, the skin should improve slightly. On average, a clear difference is noticeable after 3 treatments.

Fractional therapy allows us to thoroughly refresh and renew the skin. This is ideal for lumpy skin caused by acne scars, as the blemishes are evened out.

Fractional therapy involves making tiny regular holes in the skin in a controlled manner. This forces the skin to renew itself and form new collagen. The irregularities of acne scars are reduced and the skin appears calmer.

Our laser specialists use the Erbium Yag laser, Venus Viva, Tixel, or Ydun laser for this method.

Erbium Yag

The laser beam of the Erbium Yag works on the moisture present in the skin and evaporates the upper skin layers by means of a fractionated laser beam. When a laser beam is fractionated, it is divided into smaller light beams. The laser beam makes minuscule holes in the skin, forcing it to recover and renew. The recovery time of an Erbium Yag treatment is approximately 7 to 10 days.

Venus Viva

The Venus Viva fractional method involves punching tiny holes in the skin using micro-needles. This technique is also known as "fractional needling" or "micro needling". However, the Venus Viva's fraxel is combined with radiofrequency, generating heat in the skin. This stimulates the production of collagen and fibroblasts.

A Venus Viva treatment can be combined with a PRP - treatment (Platelet Rich Plasma) to further stimulate skin rejuvenation. The recovery time of a Venus Viva treatment is about 5 to 7 days.

Tixel

The Tixel is a form of thermal skin rejuvenation. The head of the Tixel is 1 cm2 in size and consists of small titanium pins. These pins are not sharp and are heated to 395 degrees celcius before treatment. During the treatment, these pins are briefly shot against the skin. The heat from the titanium pins then creates small holes in the skin. This process is also called thermo-mechanical ablation. These controlled micro-holes force the skin to heal and renew and stimulate the production of collagen and elastin. The downtime (recovery time) is on average 7-10 days.

Ydun

The Ydun uses a fractional laser beam to create tiny holes in the skin, forcing it to renew. In the deeper skin layers, the production of collagen is stimulated. This restores connective tissue and smoothes the skin's surface. The recovery time of the Ydun treatment is about 7 to 10 days.

Pre-care

Before treatment with fractional therapy can take place, the following are important:

  • For 3 to 4 weeks before treatment no sun and/or sunbed. The skin should not be brown from the sun.
  • At active acne the skin cannot be treated with fractional therapy
  • If you occasionally suffer from a cold sore it is important to notify the practitioner at least 1 week in advance.
  • If you pregnant are or breastfeeding gives you cannot be treated.

Number of treatments

For optimal results, several (at least three) treatments are recommended. There should be a minimum of 4 weeks between each fractional treatment. The exact treatment plan is put together by the practitioner and is based on your skin.

Aftercare

After fractional treatment, the following practical matters are important:

  • Sauna, sports and swimming are not recommended for the first 24 hours after treatment.
  • No sun and/or sunbed for at least three to four weeks. A good sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) is recommended at all times.
  • Immediately after treatment, the skin feels warm, as if you have a mild to moderate sunburn has. This glowing sensation usually subsides within 24 hours.
  • The skin can tight or taut feel and in some cases slightly swollen, especially around sensitive areas such as the eyes.
  • In the first 1-2 days, the skin is irregular red to light pink of colour. This is normal and part of the skin's repair response.
  • From day 2 to 4, a subtle 'grid pattern' become visible: small, dark dots that appear on the treated skin areas. These are microscopic crusts which are part of the healing process. This pattern is most visible around day 3 or 4.
  • Between days 4 and 7, these dots begin to detach on their own and the lattice pattern gradually disappears. During this exfoliation process, the skin may look dry or flaky look and feel somewhat rough. This is part of the skin's natural renewal process and lasts about a week. It is important to keep the skin well hydrated during this period and do not scratch or exfoliate.

Results

At week 2, the skin begins to look calmer and more even. The texture becomes noticeably smoother and any redness has largely subsided. Although the skin appears largely restored on the outside, the regeneration process continues to work on the inside. The skin continues to produce collagen in the months following treatment, thus rejuvenating it.

An optimal result is usually achieved after multiple treatments. The laser specialist will construct a treatment plan based on your skin during the first consultation.

Great experience with treatment. Extremely friendly and customer-oriented. Highly recommended!!!

How can I be sure of the capabilities of my practitioner?

Choice Guide

Nowadays we are flooded with cosmetic treatments, trends and hypes. In every neighborhood of the city there are several clinics that offer various types of treatments, each claiming to be better than the other.

But how do you choose a good clinic? And how do you know for sure that you end up with a competent practitioner?

We are happy to help you on your way with our choice guide:

First the basics

  • First, check if the clinic has a good reputation or if you know people who can recommend the clinic. A quick Google search for the clinic in question will get you a long way. Now, you don't have to be put off by a few bad reviews, but if a clinic has a lot of negative reviews, it might be smart to look elsewhere.
  • Who do you have an appointment with and is that the person who will also treat you? You can ask these questions directly by phone or email at the reception. It is wise to then google that practitioner and see if they have the right certifications and diplomas, regardless of what is stated on the website of the clinic itself. You can search for a skin therapist, cosmetic doctor, or plastic surgeon

The consultation

Once you have chosen a clinic and practitioner, it is time for a consultation. During this consultation you can ask the following questions:

  • How often should I be treated?
  • What degrees and certifications do you have?
  • How much does a treatment cost?
  • What kind of aftercare do you provide and is this included in the price?
  • What happens if the result is not good enough?

Lastly…

  • Were all your questions answered properly during the consultation? Realize that you have every right to ask questions and that these must be answered clearly.
  • Take your time. A practitioner should never force you to undergo a treatment right now. Does it feel pushy? Or do you still have doubts? Then say that you would like to think about it and that you will contact them if you want to start the treatment.

Honest information and appropriate treatment. Be helped pleasantly, and all time is taken for you. No rush job!

Number of treatments

In general, we notice that the skin becomes calmer after just one or two treatments. The acne subsides, redness decreases, and any pimples tend to dry out more quickly.

Improving acne scars usually requires more treatments. On average, this ranges from four to seven sessions, depending on the severity of the scars and your skin type. With each treatment, we see scar discoloration fade and improvements in skin texture, such as unevenness and pitting.

Results

Our treatments inhibit acne inflammation and soothe the skin. Redness decreases and any pimples dry up. We also see that the discolouration of acne scars fades and unevenness in the form of pits, for example, improves.

More than just and acne treatment

An added benefit of our acne treatments is that overall quality of your skin improves. Collagen production is stimulated, pores refine, and the skin feels firmer and more elastic. Fine lines can also soften and local blood circulation is promoted.

The result? Fresher, smoother skin with a healthy glow.

A comprehensive approach

Although our treatments inhibit inflammation and visibly reduce redness, they do not fully address the root cause of acne. In fact, acne can be caused by multiple factors, such as hormonal fluctuations, diet, stress or a deficiency of certain vitamins and minerals. We therefore also recommend always looking into whether the root cause can be addressed through your GP, to inhibit acne as effectively as possible.

From start to finish I felt like I was in capable hands. The result speaks for itself.

Q&A

What can I do about my acne myself?

Skin therapist Claire Lune explains:

If you experience trouble with your acne, it is always wise to seek advice from your GP first. The GP may prescribe you a cream, gel or pills against the acne, with or without antibiotics in it.

Alternatively, you can try using benzoyl peroxide gel. You can pick this up at the drugstore without a prescription. Do pay close attention to the directions for use and be aware that this gel, as well as pills and cream through your GP, always take a longer time to show results.

Apart from this medication, I can recommend the following:

  • Change your pillowcase at least every week.
  • When cleansing the skin, use a new towel every day.
  • Clean make-up brushes every time after use. Try to touch your face with your hands as little as possible and avoid squeezing pimples as much as possible. This can actually lead to irritation, inflammation and scarring.
  • Avoid cow's milk products, these can be a trigger.
  • Cleanse the skin every morning and every evening with a cleanser. If you wear make-up, preferably opt for double cleansing in the evening.
  • Despite oily skin, always use a day and night cream. Even if the skin feels oily, it may be dehydrated. To prevent this dehydration, the skin produces extra sebum, which is exactly what we want to prevent.
  • If you wear caps or hats, it is wise to wash them every week.
  • If necessary, you can have your skin cleaned monthly through a deep cleansing at a skin therapist or suitable beautician.

You usually cannot remove the cause of acne. So does treatment make sense?

Skin therapist Naomi explains:

The most honest advice we can give is to try to address the cause. Sometimes, if it is a hormonal issue, it is very difficult to remove the cause and the only solution is to wait until the hormones settle down.

Our treatments should therefore really be seen as a support to control active acne and counteract inflammation (inflammation).

For acne scars, our treatments are excellent and there is no good alternative solution - except trying to prevent them. Although scars will never go away completely, we can really improve them significantly, creating more peace of mind in the skin.

There are many laser clinics offering this treatment. Why should I choose you?

Skin therapist Claire Lune explains:

Most importantly, choose a clinic where there are good and experienced practitioners around who are also certified to perform this treatment, such as skin therapists, dermatologists or cosmetic doctors.

At our clinic, treatment is performed by skin therapists and there are several cosmetic doctors on hand to consult with. In that respect, we are a versatile clinic where a lot of expertise comes together under one roof.

In addition, laser treatment is central to the clinic, so we have performed this treatment many times and gained a lot of experience with it. The quality of the devices used is also incredibly important. For example, the IPL Ellipse Nordlys we use is state-of-the-art.

In addition, we strongly care for our customers and our aftercare is second to none. Is something wrong? Or do you still have a question? With us, your treatment does not stop as soon as you walk out the door, but you are always welcome for a check-up.

Still in doubt? No problem. We confirm that you look around carefully. You can use the selection guide we have compiled to make an informed choice, wherever you go.

How many treatments do I need?

Skin therapist Claire Lune explains:

Generally, acne calms down after just 1 or 2 IPL treatments. However, it is impossible to predict when acne will reappear. Improvement of acne scars requires an average of 4 to 7 treatments to achieve good results.

Although our skin treatments remove redness and inhibit inflammation, they do not remove the cause of acne. Many times, hormones, genes, diet or mineral deficiencies can be a cause.

Does the treatment hurt?

Laser specialist Tanja explains:

The flashes of the IPL feel like warm pinpricks. Almost immediately after the flash, the heat is out of the skin and you won't feel anything. Especially in areas where the acne is most active, the flashes will be most sensitive.

The treatment is actually well tolerated by everyone, making an anaesthetic unnecessary. If desired, the skin in sensitive areas can be cooled in between treatments.

How long does a treatment take?

Skin therapist Naomi explains:

The duration of a treatment depends entirely on the area to be treated. Treating acne on the cheeks takes about 15-20 minutes, while a whole face takes 30 minutes

What's the price of a treatment?

Skin therapist Naomi explains:

This depends entirely on the size of the area to be treated. Most facial acne treatments start from €180 for the cheeks, for example, while a full-face treatment costs €420.

Can anything also go wrong with this treatment?

Laser specialist Tanja explains:

In principle, this is a safe treatment, but it is important that it is performed by an experienced person who is also qualified to work with these devices.

With IPL treatment, the biggest risk is that the skin will burn and blisters will form. In the worst case, this leaves scars. This can happen if the IPL is set too heavy or if the skin is too sensitive. Another risk is that the skin may temporarily turn darker or lighter (hyper- or hypopigmentation). This usually recovers on its own, but may take 1-2 years.

I prefer not to change practitioners every time, is that possible?

Laser specialist Tanja explains:

Of course it is possible! Indeed, with us, you basically enter into a treatment programme with one practitioner who knows your skin best.

How do I look after treatment?

Skin therapist Claire Lune explains:

The skin may look somewhat sunburnt-red. This disappears within a few hours. The acne may also flare up before calming down, as it is an inflammatory form. The skin may also be slightly swollen for 3-5 days after treatment.

When can I come for follow-up treatment?

Skin therapist Naomi explains:

This depends entirely on the treatment method chosen. There should be at least 4 weeks between each IPL or fractional treatment if in the face to give the skin a rest. For all treatments in an area located below the face, such as the back, there should be a minimum of 8 weeks between treatments.

Can you recommend a good sunscreen?

Skin therapist Claire Lune explains:

We have some great products with SPF that we have tested extensively ourselves and also use daily.

  • Brush on Bloc is a mineral sun protection (SPF 30) in powder form and is very easy to quickly brush over the face on the go. A nice product without nasty ingredients.
  • Oxygenetix is a nourishing and healing foundation that we have in a range of skin tones. With it, you can camouflage the skin while also protecting it with SPF 30.
