Hair removal

Shaving, tweezing, waxing... Who doesn't hate it?

Fortunately, we can properly treat unwanted hair growth using our powerful IPL. The IPL is one of the most efficient and long-lasting forms of hair removal available.

But how exactly does that work? What do you need to take into account? And how permanent is it?

Where does that her from anyway!

Skin therapist Claire Lune explains:

From childhood, everyone has vellus hair (downy hairs) on almost the entire body. These hairs are short, thin and contain hardly any pigment. As a result, they are almost invisible.

This changes during and after puberty. Vellus hair then starts to develop into so-called 'terminal hair' in some places due to the action of hormones (androgens). Terminal hair is thick, long and coloured. In some places, this can be fine (think of beard growth in a man), but it can also be unwanted hair growth in some locations.

Depending on genes, these terminal hairs can develop anywhere on the body. Consider the face, armpits, back, arms, legs and bikini line. Hair growth can vary greatly from person to person in terms of colour and thickness, among other things. It can also develop later in life, such as whiskers in older women, or back hair in men.

Our solution

Unwanted hair growth can be excellently removed with our powerful Ellipse IPL. Although the IPL is not officially a laser, this form of hair removal is often popularly called 'laser'. It is one of the most effective, quick and long-lasting forms of hair removal available. In addition, our treatment also stimulates the production of collagen, improving skin quality.

We now have over 30 years of experience with this treatment and have the latest Ellipse IPL: the Nordlys.

The consultation

Before we start treatment, there is always a consultation with one of our experienced laser specialists. During this consultation, we discuss your wishes, the possibilities and what you can realistically expect from the treatment.

A treatment made-to-measure

Every skin is unique - and every form of hair growth requires a different approach. This is why we draw up a personalised treatment plan for you. During the consultation, our specialist examines your skin and hair growth. On this basis, together we determine the most suitable treatment, including an indication of the costs and the number of sessions required.

With more than 30 years of experience, we have treated a wide variety of skin and hair growth

A consultation with one of our laser specialists costs € 35,-. These costs will be deducted from the costs of the first treatment, provided the treatment takes place within 6 months of the consultation date. If you are already fairly certain that you wish to be treated, we can usually combine a consultation with an initial treatment on request.

Pre-care

It is important that the skin is as light as possible (not tanned) before treatment with the IPL. Furthermore, you should consider the following:

  • For body hair you should stop waxing and/or tweezing 4 to 6 weeks before the first treatment.
  • For facial hair you should stop tweezing and/or waxing 2 to 4 weeks before the first treatment
  • Sun, sunbed and the use of self-tanning cream (bronzer) should be avoided from 3 to 4 weeks before treatment.
  • Please indicate the areas to be depilated the shave evening before treatment, leaving short stubble.

Treatment

The Ellipse IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) gives short flashes of high-energy light that are directed at the skin. The light is absorbed by the pigment of the hair and directed to the hair root, which is then permanently eliminated by the energy (heat). Because the pulses of light last only a fraction of a second, only the hairs are affected and not the surrounding skin. This process is also known as selective thermolysis.

The flashes of the IPL feel like warm pinpricks. Almost immediately after the flash, the heat is out of the skin and you won't feel anything. In places where the hairs are thicker and closer together, the flashes of IPL will be more sensitive.

The duration of a treatment depends entirely on the area to be treated. For example, a bikini line takes 20 minutes on average, while an upper lip is done in 10 minutes.

The IPL achieves one of the best and most long-lasting results in hair removal.

Unwanted hair growth can be treated anywhere on the body, such as the face, armpits, back, arms, legs and bikini line. We can treat almost all skin colours as long as the hairs are darker than the skin itself. Blonde, red and grey hairs have hardly any pigment and are therefore almost impossible to eliminate. These hairs require electric epilation.

On average, we need 8 to 10 treatments for optimal hair removal on the body. In our experience, facial hair requires more treatments, on average 10 to 12.

Very knowledgeable and friendly team with effective methods and great results.

How can I be sure of the capabilities of my practitioner?

Choice Guide

Nowadays we are flooded with cosmetic treatments, trends and hypes. In every neighborhood of the city there are several clinics that offer various types of treatments, each claiming to be better than the other.

But how do you choose a good clinic? And how do you know for sure that you end up with a competent practitioner?

We are happy to help you on your way with our choice guide:

First the basics

  • First, check if the clinic has a good reputation or if you know people who can recommend the clinic. A quick Google search for the clinic in question will get you a long way. Now, you don't have to be put off by a few bad reviews, but if a clinic has a lot of negative reviews, it might be smart to look elsewhere.
  • Who do you have an appointment with and is that the person who will also treat you? You can ask these questions directly by phone or email at the reception. It is wise to then google that practitioner and see if they have the right certifications and diplomas, regardless of what is stated on the website of the clinic itself. You can search for a skin therapist, cosmetic doctor, or plastic surgeon

The consultation

Once you have chosen a clinic and practitioner, it is time for a consultation. During this consultation you can ask the following questions:

  • How often should I be treated?
  • What degrees and certifications do you have?
  • How much does a treatment cost?
  • What kind of aftercare do you provide and is this included in the price?
  • What happens if the result is not good enough?

Lastly…

  • Were all your questions answered properly during the consultation? Realize that you have every right to ask questions and that these must be answered clearly.
  • Take your time. A practitioner should never force you to undergo a treatment right now. Does it feel pushy? Or do you still have doubts? Then say that you would like to think about it and that you will contact them if you want to start the treatment.

Aftercare

After treatment, the following practical matters apply:

  • No sun and tanning bedsk for up to 2 weeks after treatment. The skin may be extra sensitive to UV light after treatment.
  • We recommend that at all times a sun protection (at least SPF 30) to be used.
  • To avoid disrupting the hair cycle, hairs may be do not wax or pluck. Depilatory cream should also be avoided. Shaving and/or cutting is allowed.
  • The hair roots are eliminated, only the hairs are still in the skin and fall out on their own when the skin renews. This allows the stubble still be visible for some time, as if nothing had happened. After 3 to 4 weeks, however, the treated hairs will fall out.
  • After treatment, the treated skin may look somewhat red look. There may also be small swellinks can be seen - follicular oedema. Both the redness and swelling generally disappear within a day. Also pigmentation spots in the treated area will appear somewhat darker, but will eventually lighten.

Very professional and very kind. I am very happy with the quality of the treatment. Thanks again!

Results

By treating the skin with the Ellipse IPL, we see that hair growth decreases significantly until virtually no hair comes back. For optimal hair removal, however, several treatments are always needed. Usually, hair growth becomes visibly softer and less after 3 to 4 treatments.

Another treatment can take place when a new batch of hair enters the growth phase and becomes visible. For body hair, this takes 8 weeks on average, and 6 weeks for facial hair.

On average, we see a permanent reduction of 70% in hair growth, which means that a maintenance treatment may be desirable. Note that the hair growth that comes back over time (the 30%) is actually always softer and lighter.

More than just hair removal

All our skin treatments stimulate blood circulation and collagen production. This not only removes hair, but will also rejuvenate and improve the skin overall.

Fantastic team, very professional, committed, customer friendly, service oriented and always deliver quality.

Sandra

Maintenance

Once we have achieved optimal hair removal, occasional maintenance treatments may be desirable. Over time, new downy hairs may develop again in terminal hairs. This can also have a hormonal cause, such as in menopausal women - think hairs on the upper lip or chin.

The new hairs do tend to be much softer and less present than the original hair growth, but a maintenance treatment may be desirable for this.

Prices

An IPL hair removal treatment starts at € 85,-.

The exact price, together with a personalised treatment plan, will be drawn up during the consultation with one of our laser specialists.

A consultation with one of our laser specialists costs € 35,-. These costs will be deducted from the costs of the treatment, provided that the treatment takes place within 6 months of the consultation date.

Q&A

There are many laser clinics offering this treatment. Why should I choose you?

Skin therapist Naomi explains:

Most importantly, you should choose a clinic that has good and experienced practitioners who are also certified to perform this treatment, such as skin therapists, dermatologists or cosmetic doctors.

At our clinic, treatment is performed by skin therapists and laser specialists, and there are several cosmetic doctors on hand to consult with. In that respect, we are a versatile clinic where a lot of expertise comes together under one roof.

In addition, laser treatment is central to the clinic, so we have performed this treatment many times and have gained a lot of experience with it. The quality of the IPL device used is also incredibly important. The Ellipse Nordlys is state-of-the-art.

In addition, we strongly care for our customers and our aftercare is second to none. Is something wrong? Or do you still have a question? With us, your treatment does not stop as soon as you walk out the door, but you are always welcome for a check-up.

Any doubts? No problem. We are firm believers that you should look around carefully. You can use the Choice Guide we have compiled to make an informed choice wherever you go.

What's the price of a treatment?

Laser specialist Tanja explains:

This depends entirely on the size of the area to be treated. As an indication: our treatments start at € 85,- for hair removal of an upper lip or small spot, while a complete bikini line € 220,-. cost.

How many treatments do I need?

Skin therapist Naomi explains:

On average, we need 8 to 10 treatments for optimal hair removal on the body. In our experience, facial hair requires more treatments, on average 10 to 12.

You will always need several treatments because the IPL only works on hairs that are in the growth phase. However, your body always has many hair follicles in the same place that are in the resting phase and only become active again later. This has to do with the hair growth cycle.

Hair growth cycle? What is it?

Laser specialist Tanja explains:

Hair growth can be distinguished into three phases:

the anagenic phase (the growth phase)
the catagenic phase (the transitional phase)
the telogen phase (the resting phase).

The body continuously has hairs in different phases interchangeably. In the growth phase, hairs are visible. As they move into the transition phase, the hairs get ready to fall out. Then the hairs fall out and the hair follicles (which are still in the skin) enter the resting phase. In the resting phase, the hairs are not visible. After a few months, the cycle then starts again.

Because the three phases of the hair cycle occur continuously interchangeably on the body, there are basically always visible and invisible (resting) hairs. Only the visible hairs can be eliminated by the energy of the IPL. This means that you will always need several treatments to remove all the hairs as optimally as possible.

Can anything also go wrong with this treatment?

Skin therapist Claire Lune explains:

In principle, this is a safe treatment, but it is important that it is performed by an experienced person who is also qualified to work with the IPL.

The biggest risk with IPL treatment is that the skin can burn and blisters can form. In the worst case, this leaves scars. This can happen if the IPL is set too heavy or if the skin is too sensitive (or sun-tanned).

Another risk is temporary darkening or lightening of the skin (hyper- or hypopigmentation). This usually corrects itself, but may take 1-2 years.

Although these risks exist and it is good to be aware of them, they are not common.

I prefer not to change practitioners every time, is that possible?

Skin therapist Claire Lune explains:

Of course it is possible! Indeed, with us, you basically enter into a treatment programme with one practitioner who knows your skin best.

How do I look after treatment?

Laser specialist Tanja explains:

After treatment, the treated skin may look somewhat red. You may also notice small swellings - follicular oedema. This swelling is there because the treated hair follicle has started to expand due to the heat. Both the redness and the swelling are a good sign that the treatment has worked and generally disappear within a day.

Pigment in the treated area will also darken a little, but will eventually lighten.

Does the treatment hurt?

Skin therapist Naomi explains:

The flashes of the IPL feel like warm pinpricks. Almost immediately after the flash, the heat is out of the skin and you won't feel anything. Especially in places where the hairs are thicker and closer together, the flashes of IPL will be more sensitive. This makes the first treatments in particular more sensitive, as hair growth is at its heaviest then.

The treatment is actually well tolerated by everyone, making an anaesthetic unnecessary. If desired, the skin in sensitive areas can be cooled in between treatments.

How long does a treatment take?

Skin therapist Claire Lune explains:

The duration of a treatment depends entirely on the area to be treated. For example, a bikini line takes 20 minutes on average, while an upper lip is done in 10 minutes.

When can I come for follow-up treatment?

Skin therapist Claire Lune explains:

Another treatment can take place when a new batch of hair enters the growth phase and becomes visible. For body hair, this takes 8 weeks on average, and 6 weeks for facial hair.

Are the hairs eventually gone permanently?

Skin therapist Naomi explains:

The reality is that no clinic can achieve a result of 100%. If they do promise it, you should be immediately cautious. Hair growth will reduce with each treatment and the remaining hairs usually become softer and lighter. So you will always get a visible improvement, but on average this is around 70%. It is very important for us not to create false expectations about this.

How often should I come for a maintenance treatment?

Laser specialist Tanja explains:

Once we have achieved optimal hair removal (usually after about 8 to 12 times), how regularly a maintenance treatment is needed depends on the person. For some, the result needs to be refreshed after a year, while for others it may take years for hair to grow back.

Isn't it better to just keep shaving or waxing?

Skin therapist Claire Lune explains:

A reduction of 70% may not sound like much, but the hairs that come back annually are more spread out and also much softer in texture. If you do not want to come for an annual maintenance treatment, all our treatments make your own maintenance just as much faster and easier.
